Harish Rana, a resident of Rajnagar Extension in Ghaziabad , breathed his last at AIIMS, Delhi. He was a man granted euthanasia by the Supreme Court. He died at AIIMS, Delhi, after being in a coma for over 13 years. Rana breathed his last at AIIMS, Delhi, on Tuesday (March 24, 2026). He had been bedridden for the past 13 years, living like a living corpse. Today, he was freed from his painful life.
Supreme Court allows removal of life-saving equipment
After an accident, Haris Rana, a resident of Ghaziabad, was left unable to speak or walk. After surviving for 13 years with the help of machines and medical support, the Supreme Court authorized passive euthanasia, or the removal of life-support equipment. This court decision also set an important precedent for end-of-life laws in India.
The court delivered this important decision after considering the reports of several medical boards and the family's consent. The court directed that Harish be admitted to the Palliative Care Department of AIIMS, Delhi, and a comprehensive plan be developed for his end-of-life care.
Who was Harish Rana?
Harish Rana, originally from Ghaziabad, was a student at Punjab University in 2013. While studying there, he fell from the fourth floor of his hostel and suffered a serious brain injury. Following the accident, doctors placed him on life support, and he has been bedridden ever since.
