A disturbing case from Chandigarh has raised serious concerns about ethics in the private healthcare sector. A young doctor, Dr. Prabhleen Kaur, resigned on her very first day after allegedly witnessing malpractice inside a reputed private hospital. Her claims have sparked widespread debate after a video explaining her decision went viral on social media.
According to Dr. Kaur, she had joined the hospital with the intention of serving patients, but quickly realized that medical decisions were being influenced by management rather than actual patient needs. She alleged that patients were being unnecessarily kept in the ICU to inflate hospital bills. Even more concerning, she claimed that admission and treatment decisions were being taken by non-specialists, while doctors were expected to sign off on these actions, putting their professional credibility at risk.
Explaining her decision, she said she refused to be used as a front for unethical practices. She emphasized that ICU admissions should strictly depend on a patient’s medical condition, not financial motives. Choosing integrity over her job, she decided to step away immediately rather than compromise her ethics.
When asked why she did not reveal the hospital’s name, Dr. Kaur pointed to the lack of protection for whistleblowers, stating that individuals without influence or resources often face pressure and risks when exposing powerful institutions. Despite this, she maintained that she would continue to speak out against such practices.
Her stand has received support from voices like Jatinder Singh Shanti, a member of the Punjab State and Chandigarh Human Rights Commission, who praised her courage and highlighted the growing commercialization of private healthcare.
The incident has reignited concerns about accountability in the healthcare system and raised questions about regulatory oversight. While the hospital in question has not yet responded publicly, the case has sparked an important conversation about ethics, transparency, and patient rights in modern medical practice.
