Delhi Metro Suicide Case: Man Jumps in Front of Moving Train at Uttam Nagar East Station, Second Incident in Four Days

A tragic incident was reported on Tuesday morning at the Uttam Nagar East Metro Station in Delhi, where a 45-year-old man died by suicide after jumping in front of a moving metro train. The incident caused panic among commuters and briefly disrupted services on the metro line.

The deceased has been identified as Maharaj Singh, a resident of Karauli district in Rajasthan. According to police, he worked as a painter and had come to Delhi to attend his niece’s wedding at his elder brother’s home in Uttam Nagar. The upcoming wedding celebrations at the house have now turned into mourning.

Battling Depression for Years

Providing details, Metro DCP Kushal Pal Singh said the incident occurred around 10:12 am. Preliminary investigations revealed that Maharaj Singh had been suffering from severe depression for several years. He was undergoing treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and had reportedly visited the hospital for consultation just a day before the incident.

Family Left Devastated

Maharaj Singh is survived by his wife and three children—an 18-year-old daughter and two sons aged 17 and 20. After the incident, police took custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Legal proceedings have been initiated under Section 194 of the BNSS Act.

Second Suicide at Same Station in Four Days

This is the second suicide case reported at the same metro station within just four days. On Friday, February 20, a 17-year-old student, Ashwini Dagar, allegedly jumped in front of a train at Uttam Nagar East Metro Station. He was a resident of Najafgarh and was preparing for competitive examinations.

The repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about passenger safety at Delhi Metro stations and renewed demands for the installation of platform screen doors (PSDs) to prevent such tragedies.
