Dark Elbows and Knees Making You Self-Conscious? Try This Simple 3-Ingredient Remedy

The skin around your elbows and knees is often darker and rougher than the rest of your body. Since these areas have fewer oil glands, the skin can become dry more easily. Constant movement, friction and repeated stretching can also contribute to roughness and uneven pigmentation.

Despite this, elbows and knees are often left out of regular skincare routines. Their darker appearance may become more noticeable when wearing shorts, dresses or sleeveless outfits.

Beauty expert Suparna Trikha has shared a simple home remedy using just three ingredients that can be applied to darker areas such as the elbows and knees.

You only need 3 ingredients

For this remedy, you will need:

  • Lemon

  • Sugar

  • Orange peel powder

These ingredients are commonly used in DIY skincare routines for exfoliating the skin and improving its appearance.

How to use this remedy

Start by cutting a lemon into two halves. Sprinkle some sugar and orange peel powder onto the cut side of the lemon.

Gently massage the lemon over your elbows and knees using small circular motions. If the mixture feels too dry or the sugar and orange peel powder fall off, add a small amount of water to the area.

While massaging, gently squeeze the lemon so that a little of its juice comes into contact with the skin.

Avoid rubbing too aggressively, as excessive friction can irritate the skin and potentially make pigmentation worse.

How often can you use it?

According to beauty expert Suparna Trikha, this remedy can be used regularly on areas such as the elbows, knees and darker finger joints.

However, if your skin is sensitive, irritated or has cuts or rashes, it is better to avoid applying lemon or abrasive ingredients to the area.

Why might these ingredients help?

Lemon

Lemon contains citric acid and vitamin C. Its acidic nature can provide mild exfoliation, while vitamin C is commonly used in skincare products aimed at improving the appearance of uneven pigmentation.

Sugar

Sugar granules can act as a physical exfoliant, helping remove some dead skin cells from the surface. However, rubbing too hard can damage or irritate the skin, so gentle application is important.

Orange peel powder

Orange peel contains plant compounds and is commonly used in traditional and DIY skincare routines. It may help exfoliate the skin and improve its overall appearance.

Don't forget regular skincare

A home remedy alone may not completely eliminate dark elbows or knees, especially when pigmentation is caused by ongoing friction, dryness or an underlying skin condition.

For healthier-looking skin, keep these areas moisturised regularly, avoid excessive scrubbing and use sunscreen on exposed elbows and knees. If the pigmentation is persistent, suddenly worsens or appears along with itching, thickening or other skin changes, consider consulting a dermatologist.

With consistent and gentle skincare, you can help keep your elbows and knees smoother and more even-looking.
