Cough Syrups: Do children need cough syrup for colds and coughs? Learn the answer here.
Cough Syrups: Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a leading Indian neurologist, has stated that children don't need to be given cough syrup for colds and coughs, as it doesn't promote quick recovery. According to Dr. Kumar, most coughs in children are caused by viral infections, which typically clear up on their own within about a week. Therefore, giving children cough syrup without consulting a doctor isn't necessary; rest and proper care are sufficient.
"Cough syrups don't cure these conditions or speed recovery. Their ingredients, such as antihistamines, decongestants, and codeine, can cause side effects such as drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, or breathing problems," he said.

Children die after consuming adulterated 'Coldrif' syrup in Madhya Pradesh
Dr. Kumar's statement comes at a time when at least 14 children have died in Madhya Pradesh after consuming the adulterated "Coldrif" syrup. Two children also died in Rajasthan last week after consuming the same syrup. The state government has ordered a special investigation into the incident. Furthermore, the doctor who prescribed the syrup to the children in Madhya Pradesh has been arrested.
Why are DEG and EG dangerous for children?
Investigations have revealed that many children died from toxic chemicals – diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG). These two chemicals are sometimes used as solvents in pharmaceuticals but are extremely toxic. Even small amounts can cause serious kidney damage and death, especially in children.
