Cold Wave Alert Issued: Dense Fog and Freezing Winds to Grip Regions Till January 5

A severe winter spell is tightening its grip across several parts of the country, with the weather department issuing alerts for cold wave conditions, dense fog, and falling temperatures over the next few days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), people should remain cautious as chilly winds, reduced visibility, and cold day conditions are expected to persist until at least January 5, impacting daily life and travel.

IMD Forecast: Cold Wave and Dense Fog Over the Next Few Days

The IMD has warned that the next five to seven days may witness dense to very dense fog in multiple regions, especially during night and early morning hours. In addition to fog, cold wave conditions are likely to affect several northern and eastern parts, increasing the risk of cold-related health issues.

Weather experts advise people to limit early morning exposure, stay warm, and remain updated with official advisories, particularly those commuting or travelling long distances.

Cold Day Conditions Expected in Eastern Regions

As per the latest IMD bulletin, certain areas are likely to experience “cold day” conditions on January 4 and 5. During a cold day, daytime temperatures remain significantly lower than normal, even when sunlight is present. This can lead to increased discomfort, especially for children, elderly individuals, and those with respiratory conditions.

The department has indicated that temperatures may remain below seasonal averages, with cold winds further intensifying the chill.

Severe Cold and Fog to Impact the National Capital Region

Weather officials have stated that cold wave conditions may be observed in isolated pockets between January 3 and January 5. Dense to very dense fog is expected during night and morning hours, which could disrupt road, rail, and air travel.

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius, while the combination of fog and cold winds may make conditions feel colder than recorded values. Residents are advised to drive cautiously and follow traffic advisories during low-visibility hours.

Cold Winds Likely to Intensify in Central-Eastern Areas

Meteorological authorities have pointed out that a western disturbance is becoming active again, leading to the flow of cold winds across several regions. From January 3 onwards, cold wave conditions may set in, accompanied by a noticeable drop in minimum temperatures.

Experts estimate that night temperatures could fall by two to three degrees Celsius, increasing the intensity of winter conditions and raising the need for precautionary measures.

Light Rain and Falling Temperatures in Northwestern Regions

Due to the impact of the western disturbance, light rainfall has been recorded in some areas. The IMD has predicted that between January 4 and January 6, minimum temperatures could dip by two to four degrees Celsius, potentially triggering cold wave conditions.

Residents in these areas should be prepared for sudden changes in weather, including colder nights and chilly mornings.

Clear Skies Lead to Temperature Drop in Northern Hill Areas

Clear weather conditions have resulted in a sharp fall in minimum temperatures in hill regions. The IMD expects the weather to remain largely dry over the next few days, with no significant precipitation forecast until January 5.

Despite dry conditions, the cold is expected to intensify, especially during nighttime, making it essential for people to take adequate precautions.

Cold Wave Likely in Northern Agricultural Belts

The IMD has also warned of cold wave conditions in agricultural regions between January 3 and January 6. Farmers have been advised to protect crops and livestock from extreme cold, as frost-like conditions may damage sensitive produce.

Slight Temperature Rise Followed by Cooling Trend in Eastern Coastal Areas

Weather officials have predicted a slight rise in minimum temperatures in southern districts over the next two days. However, from Sunday onwards, sub-Himalayan regions may experience a drop of two to three degrees Celsius in night temperatures.

There is also a possibility of light rain or snowfall at isolated locations, while overall weather conditions are expected to remain mostly dry over the next week. Light to moderate fog may appear during morning hours in some areas.

Advisory for Citizens

The IMD has urged citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary exposure to cold, and stay informed through official weather updates. Dense fog, cold winds, and falling temperatures may impact health, travel, and daily routines over the coming days.

With winter conditions intensifying, timely precautions and planning can help reduce discomfort and ensure safety during this cold wave spell.
