The Asia Cup 2025 trophy dispute remains unresolved following a tense Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting held on September 30, where the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) representatives demanded the trophy be handed over to the Indian team. The Indian team, having won the tournament, has yet to receive the trophy and medals in the traditional presentation ceremony.
During the meeting, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar confronted ACC President and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, accusing him of taking the trophy and medals to his hotel without properly handing them over to Team India. They insisted the trophy belongs to the ACC and called for adherence to protocol.
However, Naqvi rejected all allegations of misconduct and refused to apologize, calling the reports “fabricated nonsense” spread by Indian media for publicity. He accused India of unnecessarily politicizing cricket and maintained he was ready to hand over the trophy but insisted the Indian captain must personally collect it from the ACC office in Dubai. This demand was promptly rejected by BCCI as unjustified.
Despite Naqvi’s subsequent apology for the chaotic post-final scenes, the core issue of trophy handover remains tense. The BCCI is considering filing a formal complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and has even threatened impeachment proceedings against Naqvi for breaching protocols and damaging the sport’s spirit.
The trophy, as confirmed by sources, is currently with the UAE Cricket Board, creating further uncertainty over when and how it will reach the Indian team. This controversy casts a shadow over India’s emphatic Asia Cup victory and highlights the ongoing politicization and strained relations between the cricket boards of India and Pakistan.
