Team India emerged victorious in the Asia Cup 2025 by defeating Pakistan by five wickets, securing their ninth title. However, the celebrations were marred by controversy when the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi. Naqvi, who also serves as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Pakistan's Interior Minister, walked away from the presentation ceremony with the trophy and medals, heading to his hotel without handing them to India. This unprecedented act shocked fans and officials alike.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed strong disapproval of Naqvi's actions. Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that India took a conscious decision not to accept the trophy from someone who is a senior leader of a country currently waging a war against India. He stated, "We cannot accept a trophy from a person who represents a country that is openly hostile and waging war against our country." While the Indian players were willing to receive the trophy from a neutral ACC official, Naqvi insisted on presenting it himself, prompting the Indian team to boycott the ceremony.
Saikia condemned Naqvi's decision to take the trophy and medals away, calling it "unexpected and very childish." The BCCI has now issued an ultimatum, demanding the prompt return of the trophy to Team India. If Naqvi fails to comply, the BCCI plans to lodge a strong protest against him at the upcoming ICC conference in Dubai in November.
Despite the controversy, Saikia praised the Indian team for their dominant performance throughout the tournament, winning all their matches from the group stages to the final. The incident has further amplified tensions between the cricket boards of India and Pakistan, casting a shadow over what should have been a memorable sporting achievement for Team India.
