The '8th Pay Commission' has become a major topic of discussion among government employees and teachers across the country. While the process of gathering suggestions and information from various ministries, departments, and employee associations is underway, teacher associations have demanded major changes to the pay structure. Currently, the proposal to set the starting basic pay of 'entry-level 6' teachers at ₹1,34,500 is the most discussed.
How much can the salary of government teachers increase?
The most important demand is to increase the 'fitment factor' under the 8th Pay Commission. During the 7th Pay Commission, this factor was 2.57, but now it is being demanded to increase it to between 2.86 and 3. If this demand is accepted, there could be a significant increase in basic pay. According to various estimates, the 'fitment factor' could be between 2.28 and 2.86, which is likely to increase the minimum salary by between ₹41,000 and ₹51,000.

Apart from salary, what else is going to increase?
Not only are salaries being demanded, but so are house rent allowances (HRA) and other allowances. Teachers say that the rising cost of living in major cities necessitates an increase in house rent allowances. They are also demanding the implementation of the "10-20-30" career progression scheme and an increase in annual salary increments from 3% to 5%.
