Your UPI App Has a Useful Safety Feature Most People Ignore: Check This Before Making Payments

UPI has made digital payments incredibly convenient. A few taps are enough to pay at a shop, send money to a friend or settle a bill. But this convenience also means that users can sometimes make payments too quickly without checking the details properly.
One simple habit can make a major difference: always verify the payment information on your screen before entering your UPI PIN.
Check the Recipient's Name
When you scan a QR code or enter a UPI ID, your payment app generally displays the recipient's name before the transaction is completed.
Don't ignore this information.
If you are paying a shop called ABC Traders but the payment screen displays an unfamiliar personal name, stop and confirm the details with the merchant before proceeding.
A QR code can be replaced or displayed incorrectly, so checking the recipient's name is an important final safety step.
The UPI PIN Does Not Receive Money
This is one of the most important rules every UPI user should remember.
You generally do not need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. The PIN is used to authorise a payment from your bank account.
If someone tells you to scan a QR code and enter your UPI PIN to receive a refund, prize money, cashback or payment, treat it as a major warning sign.
Don't Approve Unknown Collect Requests
You may occasionally receive a payment request from another UPI user. Never approve a request simply because it appears on your phone.
Read the request carefully and determine whether you actually know the person or business requesting the money.
If you don't recognise it, decline it rather than approving it accidentally.
Check the Amount Before Entering Your PIN
A surprisingly common mistake is focusing on the recipient while overlooking the amount.
Before entering your UPI PIN, check both the recipient's name and the exact amount displayed on the screen. This is particularly important when paying through QR codes at busy shops or restaurants.
Even a genuine transaction can go wrong if an incorrect amount has been entered.
Don't Share Your UPI PIN With Anyone
Your bank, UPI app or customer-care representative should not need your UPI PIN to "verify" your account.
Never disclose your UPI PIN to a caller, shopkeeper, delivery agent or anyone claiming to be helping you complete a transaction.
The same rule applies to OTPs, debit-card PINs and internet-banking passwords.
Be Careful With Screen-Sharing Apps
Scammers may try to convince users to install remote-access or screen-sharing applications to "fix" a banking or payment problem.
Giving another person access to your screen while you are using a banking or UPI application can expose sensitive information and potentially allow them to manipulate what you see.
If someone unexpectedly asks you to install such an application during a payment-related conversation, stop the interaction.
What If You Make a Fraudulent Payment?
If you realise that you have made an unauthorised or fraudulent UPI transaction, contact your bank and the relevant payment service immediately. Quick reporting can be important in attempting to stop or recover funds.
You should also report suspected financial cyber fraud through India's official cybercrime reporting channels.
Make the Final Check a Habit
UPI is designed to make payments fast, but speed should never mean skipping verification.
Before entering your PIN, take five seconds to check who you're paying, how much you're paying and whether you actually initiated the transaction.
