Who Should Avoid Coconut Water? Experts Share Caution for These Conditions

Coconut water is widely celebrated for its health benefits, including aiding hydration, digestion, and weight management, especially during hot weather. A 240 ml serving provides about 60 calories, 15 grams of carbohydrates, and essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. Many enjoy coconut water daily, often on an empty stomach in the morning. However, experts caution that certain individuals should avoid consuming coconut water, as it may worsen their health conditions.

According to nutritionist Shweta Shah, people with the following conditions should refrain from drinking coconut water:

  • Low Blood Pressure:
Coconut water can lower blood pressure, so individuals with already low readings (e.g., 110/70 mmHg or below) risk their BP dropping further, which can cause dizziness or fainting.

  • Poor Digestion or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):
Those suffering from weak digestive systems or IBS may experience increased gas, bloating, or discomfort after drinking coconut water because it can aggravate digestive issues.

  • Cold, Cough, and Sinus Problems:
Coconut water has a "cold" effect on the body and may worsen symptoms of cold, cough, or sinus congestion. It is best avoided during acute respiratory illnesses.

  • Diabetes:
Although coconut water contains natural sugars, Ayurveda expert Kiran Gupta advises that diabetics limit intake to one serving per day. Those with high blood sugar should avoid drinking it altogether to prevent sugar spikes.

Regarding consumption timing, experts recommend drinking coconut water between 9 and 10 AM for best benefits and caution against drinking it in the evening, especially in humid or interior regions. Moderation according to weather and individual health is key to enjoying coconut water safely.
