WhatsApp's New AI Message Summaries Feature: Read Hundreds of Unread Chats in Seconds

WhatsApp is working on one of its most useful features yet—AI-powered message summaries. Designed for people who often return to dozens or even hundreds of unread messages, the new feature can generate a short summary of missed conversations, helping users catch up without reading every single message.

The feature uses Meta AI to analyse unread chats and create a concise overview of what was discussed. Whether you've been away from your phone during work, travelling, or simply muted a busy group chat, AI summaries could save you a significant amount of time.

One of the biggest concerns whenever AI is involved is privacy, but WhatsApp says the feature has been built with security in mind. The summaries are generated using Meta's Private Processing technology, which is designed so that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the contents of your messages while creating the summary. Your chats continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, and the AI processes only what's necessary to generate the recap.

The feature is entirely optional and will remain turned off by default. Users who want to use AI summaries will need to enable it manually from WhatsApp's settings. Individual chat participants will not know whether someone has generated a summary of unread messages, ensuring a seamless experience.

Message summaries are expected to be especially useful for large family groups, office chats, school or college groups, and community channels where dozens of messages can accumulate within a few hours. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of texts, users can quickly understand the key points and decide whether they need to read the full conversation.

WhatsApp is also introducing controls that allow users to exclude specific chats from AI features. Through the app's Advanced Chat Privacy settings, users can choose conversations that should never be processed by AI tools, adding another layer of privacy and control.

Initially, the feature is expected to roll out in English for select users before expanding to more languages and regions in future updates. As with most WhatsApp features, the rollout is likely to happen gradually over several weeks.

The addition of AI message summaries reflects a growing trend in messaging apps, where artificial intelligence is being used not to replace conversations but to make managing them easier. For users juggling multiple personal and professional chats every day, this could become one of WhatsApp's most valuable productivity features.

If rolled out globally as expected, AI summaries may fundamentally change how people handle unread messages, making it easier than ever to stay on top of conversations without spending valuable time scrolling through lengthy chat histories.
