Automakers are responding to this demand by expanding their CNG line-ups and developing factory-fitted CNG versions of existing models. Several new options could arrive in the Indian market in the coming months, including models from Hyundai, Tata Motors and Kia.
Here are four upcoming CNG cars that could attract buyers looking for better fuel economy without moving to an electric vehicle.
Hyundai Bayon CNG
The Hyundai Bayon is one of the models expected to make its way to India, with a possible launch around Diwali 2026. If introduced with CNG, it could become Hyundai’s first sub-4-metre-plus vehicle in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG option.
Reports suggest that the CNG version could use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine along with a company-fitted CNG system.
One interesting aspect could be the placement of the CNG tank. Instead of occupying a significant portion of the luggage area, the tank is reportedly positioned underneath the vehicle. This could help preserve usable boot space.
If launched, the Bayon CNG could face competition from CNG SUVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris CNG.
Tata Curvv CNG
Tata Motors could also expand its CNG portfolio with a CNG version of the Curvv. The company has been working on expanding CNG availability across its larger vehicles, making the Curvv a potential candidate for the technology.
According to reports, the Curvv CNG could use Tata’s dual-cylinder CNG setup, which is designed to make more efficient use of available space.
The expected powertrain could feature a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine adapted for CNG, with an estimated output of around 99 bhp and 170 Nm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is also expected.
If introduced, the Curvv CNG could become an interesting option for buyers who want the distinctive styling of a coupe SUV along with the lower running costs associated with CNG.
Tata Sierra CNG
The upcoming Tata Sierra could also join the company’s growing CNG range. The SUV has reportedly been spotted during emissions testing, leading to speculation that Tata is evaluating or preparing a CNG version.
Tata has previously indicated plans to introduce CNG technology in more vehicles above the 4-metre mark. The Sierra’s platform is also understood to have been designed with different powertrain options in mind.
The Sierra CNG could reportedly use Tata’s i-CNG technology with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
If it reaches production, the CNG Sierra could compete with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris CNG, Grand Vitara CNG and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder CNG.
Kia Carens Clavis CNG
Kia is another manufacturer preparing to enter the factory-fitted CNG segment. The company is reportedly testing a CNG version of the Carens Clavis, with a possible launch before Diwali 2026.
The upcoming model is expected to feature a factory-installed CNG system rather than an aftermarket conversion. Testing of the CNG-powered MPV has reportedly already begun on Indian roads.
The Carens Clavis CNG could use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The current Carens can be fitted with a government-approved dealer-installed CNG kit, but a factory-fitted version could offer buyers a more integrated alternative.
