Agnivesh held key roles within the Vedanta Group and its associated companies. He served as the non-executive chairman of Hindustan Zinc, a position he stepped down from in 2019. He also served as chairman of the board of directors at Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a Vedanta-backed company. He also served as chairman and managing director of Fujairah Gold FZC, a precious metals refining company based in the UAE. He also held directorships at other group subsidiaries, including Twin Star International Limited and Sterlite Display Technologies.

At the age of 19, he arrived in Mumbai with a tiffin box and a bed. Anil's sole goal was to make a name for himself. In his early years, he experimented with various businesses, but faced nine consecutive failures. Yet, his determination remained unshaken. In 1976, he founded Vedanta. Anil Agarwal began in the scrap metal trade, which gave him a basic understanding of the industry. He entered the manufacturing world with the establishment of Sterlite Industries in 1986. Launching the country's first private copper smelter and refinery in 1993 was a turning point. The acquisitions of BALCO and Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) in 2001 catapulted his business to new heights. These deals earned him the sobriquet "Metal King" in the industry.
