Vaibhav Suryavanshi: Just 1 Six in 3 Matches — Why Is He Struggling to Score Freely in Sri Lanka?

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s recent outing in the ongoing tri-series in Sri Lanka has been far from his explosive IPL reputation. Despite being known for his aggressive batting style, the left-hander has managed only one six across three matches and has struggled to convert starts into big scores.
Consistent starts, but no big innings
In the tri-series so far, Suryavanshi’s scores have been:
- 14 vs Sri Lanka A
- 44 vs Afghanistan A
- 21 vs Sri Lanka A
While he has shown intent in all three innings, he has failed to cross the fifty mark. Each time, he got off to a promising start but lost his wicket soon after, preventing him from building a long innings.
High-risk approach is costing him
One of the key reasons behind his struggles appears to be his ultra-aggressive batting style. Vaibhav tends to attack from the very first ball, looking to dominate bowlers early.
This approach works well on flat, batting-friendly pitches, but becomes risky when conditions are slower. In Sri Lanka, bowlers have been able to exploit these conditions by varying pace and keeping lines tight, forcing him into errors after his initial bursts.
Dambulla pitch making batting difficult
The matches have been played at Dambulla, a venue known for its tricky surface. The pitch often slows down and stays low, making stroke play difficult.
On such surfaces:
- Timing becomes harder as the ball doesn’t come onto the bat
- Late shots are required instead of early swinging
- Shot selection becomes more important than raw power
This is an area where Vaibhav is still developing, as his natural game involves early judgment and aggressive swing.
Why his IPL form is not translating
Vaibhav had previously hit 72 sixes in the IPL, showcasing his explosive ability. However, international and A-team conditions are different:
- Better tactical bowling plans from opposition
- Slower, more challenging pitches
- Less margin for error while attacking
This combination has restricted his ability to free his arms and consistently clear the boundary.
What he needs to improve
Despite the current struggles, Vaibhav’s talent is not in doubt. However, experts would point toward a few key adjustments:
- Building innings before accelerating
- Adapting shot selection based on pitch conditions
- Developing patience in longer formats like List A cricket
- Learning to rotate strike when boundaries are not available
Final outlook
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s current form reflects a learning phase rather than a technical failure. The conditions in Sri Lanka have exposed gaps in his adaptability, but they also offer valuable experience for a young batter still shaping his game.
