When making UPI payments, people often make the mistake of sending money to the wrong number. In a hurry, we often forget where and to which number we're sending the money. In such cases, after the transaction is complete and the recipient hasn't received the money, we realize we've made the payment to the wrong number. If this happens to you, don't panic. According to RBI guidelines, if a UPI payment is made to the wrong number, you should immediately report it to the NPCI toll-free number. This increases the chances of getting your money back.
Report incorrect transactions to NPCI
UPRID payments often go to the wrong number due to haste. People shouldn't panic. Instead, they should report the matter immediately to get their money back. Once the UPI PIN is entered, the UPI transaction cannot be canceled. If you accidentally sent money to someone, you can contact the recipient and request a refund. If this isn't possible, you can file a complaint with NPCI.
Call this toll-free number
You can file your complaint by calling the NPCI toll-free number 1800-120-1740. You can also file a written complaint by visiting your bank branch and filling out the required form. If the bank refuses to help you or delays taking action, you can file a complaint against the bank at https://rbi.org.in/Home.aspx.
Save the transaction number
As per Reserve Bank of India guidelines, if an online payment is mistakenly transferred to another person's account, the bank has to review the complaint and process the refund within 48 hours.
Remember, if you receive a money deduction message after making a payment using UPI or net banking, keep it safe. It contains the transaction/PPBL number. This number is required when filing a complaint.
