UIDAI's Security Shield: Know the benefits and process of locking Aadhaar biometrics

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a powerful feature called "Biometric Lock/Unlock" to address this issue. This feature gives Aadhaar holders complete control over their data.

What is a biometric lock?

Biometric lock is a security feature that allows Aadhaar holders to temporarily block their biometric information (fingerprint and iris scan). Once this feature is activated, no transactions can be performed using biometric authentication. This means that even if a fraudster has someone's Aadhaar number, they will not be able to authenticate using biometrics.

Whenever the user needs to verify themselves (such as for KYC or when withdrawing money through AEPS), they can unlock it for a few minutes.

Why should one use this feature?

  1. Financial Security: This is the most effective way to prevent fraud through Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS).
  2. Data privacy: This ensures that no third party can use your biometrics without your consent.
  3. Easy control: It can be activated or deactivated anytime from home using mobile or laptop.

Prerequisites for biometric locking

The most important requirement to take advantage of this facility is that a valid mobile number must be linked to your Aadhaar card. The entire process is based on an OTP, which is sent to the registered mobile number.

Biometric locking process

Aadhaar holders can secure their biometrics from home through the official website. The process is outlined below:

  1. First of all, visit the official website of UIDAI or 'myAadhaar' portal.
  2. There, select the 'Login' option. Enter your Aadhaar number and the captcha code.
  3. Login by entering the OTP received on the registered mobile number.
  4. The option of 'Lock/Unlock Biometrics' will appear on the dashboard, click on it.
  5. The next page will provide information about this feature. After reading it, click 'Next.'
  6. A checkbox will appear on the screen, requiring you to agree. Tick it and confirm.
  7. After this a message will appear on the screen that the biometrics have been successfully locked.

How to do biometric lock through mAadhaar app?

Those who do not have access to a computer can use the mAadhaar app on a smartphone:

  1. Download the mAadhaar app from Google Play Store or App Store.
  2. Open the app and login with your registered mobile number.
  3. Set up your profile by going to 'Register My Aadhaar'.
  4. After opening the profile, scroll down and you will find the option of 'Biometric Lock'.
  5. Click on it and select 'Lock Biometric', following the instructions on the screen.
  6. Biometrics will be locked once you confirm again through OTP or password.

How to unlock locked biometrics?

When biometric verification is required for government work, banking, or SIM card transactions, it needs to be unlocked. There are two ways to unlock it:

  • Temporary Unlock: This option activates biometrics for a short time (typically 10 minutes). After that, the data automatically relocks. This is a secure option.
  • Permanent Disable: If a person wants to avoid the hassle of locking and unlocking again and again, he can also turn off the locking feature completely.

The unlocking process is the same as locking. After logging in, click 'Unlock Biometrics' and select the temporary or permanent option depending on your needs.

Caution is the best defense. By using the biometric lock feature, Aadhaar holders can protect their hard-earned money and identity. This is a free service, and every Aadhaar user should take advantage of it. A little awareness can prevent significant financial losses.
