A shocking incident from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, highlights how a small attempt to save money can turn into a life-threatening situation. A car driver, trying to avoid paying a ₹125 toll fee, took a shortcut through a railway underpass — a decision that nearly cost him his life.
Shortcut Turned Into a Trap
The incident took place at the Bhikkanpur railway underpass in the Sarsawa police station area. The driver was traveling from Haryana to Saharanpur when he decided to skip the highway toll plaza and take an alternative route through Bhikkanpur village.
Due to unseasonal rain, the underpass was flooded with knee-deep water. Despite the visible danger, the driver drove into the water, hoping to cross through safely.
Car Stuck, Passengers Trapped
As the vehicle reached the middle of the underpass, the engine stalled. Within minutes, the water level started rising, trapping the passengers inside the car. Panic set in, and the occupants remained stuck for nearly 20 minutes, fearing for their lives.
Unable to escape, they called 112 emergency services for help.
Police and Villagers Save the Day
Upon receiving the distress call, Dial 112 police team PRV-5986 rushed to the spot. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, they took help from local villagers. A tractor and ropes were arranged, and after a tough rescue operation, the submerged car was pulled out safely.
Driver Admits His Mistake
After the rescue, the driver admitted that he chose the route only to save ₹125 in toll charges and never imagined the risk would be so dangerous.
Police Warning to Public
Following the incident, the Sarsawa police issued an advisory urging people to avoid waterlogged underpasses and unknown shortcuts during the rainy season. They warned that saving a few rupees is not worth risking lives.
