- 31 Jan, 2026
Under the updated traffic regulations, it has become essential to act promptly after receiving a traffic challan. Authorities have made it clear that delaying payment or ignoring a challan can lead to serious consequences, including suspension of driving licence and vehicle-related services.
45 days deadline to pay or file an objection
As per an official notification issued on January 20, 2026, anyone who receives a traffic challan must either pay the fine or submit an objection within 45 days. If no action is taken within this period, the challan will be automatically treated as accepted, and further penalties may follow.
How and when challans will be communicated
Traffic enforcement has now become largely digital:
-
Manual (paper) challans must be delivered within 15 days
-
E-challans will be sent to the registered vehicle owner within 3 days via SMS or email
This system ensures that vehicle owners receive timely information and can take action without delay.
Process for filing an objection
If a challan has been wrongly issued, the vehicle owner has the right to challenge it through the official online portal. According to the rules:
-
The authorized officer must decide on the objection within three days
-
If the challan is cancelled or no decision is taken within the time limit, it will be considered invalid
-
The cancellation order will be uploaded on the portal, and the individual may also approach the court if required
Serious consequences of unpaid challans
Failure to act on a challan can trigger strict enforcement measures, including:
-
Suspension of driving licence
-
Blocking of vehicle registration (RC)
-
Restriction on vehicle-related services
-
Possible seizure of the vehicle in extreme cases
These actions can be taken to ensure compliance and closure of pending challans.
Act early to avoid trouble
Authorities are urging vehicle owners to regularly check their challan status and resolve issues within the prescribed timeline. Paying the fine or filing an objection on time can help avoid legal complications and disruption of essential vehicle services.
