China Hospital Horror Story: Serious negligence at a government hospital in China has shocked social media. During a cesarean delivery, the midwife severed a newborn's finger. Major questions are now being raised about the surgery, compensation, and medical safety.
Newborn Injury Surgery: This incident occurred at Shuyi County People's Hospital in eastern China's Jiangsu Province. On the morning of December 25th, a baby was born via cesarean section. About two hours after the birth, doctors informed the father that the baby's middle finger on his left hand had been accidentally severed during the surgery. The family was devastated by the news.
Where was he taken for treatment?
After the finger was severed, the baby was transferred to two hospitals. Finally, he was admitted to Wuxi No. 9 People's Hospital, about 300 kilometers away. Surgery to reattach the baby's finger was performed there. Doctors reported the operation as successful, and the baby was later transferred back to Shuyi Hospital for rehabilitation. According to the family, the midwife said the baby's fingers suddenly moved while cutting the umbilical cord, causing the accident. However, on January 5, the Shuyi County Health Commission issued a statement clearly stating that it was the midwife's gross negligence that led to the partial amputation of the newborn's finger.
What action did the hospital and administration take?
Following the incident, the midwife has been suspended from work. The hospital apologized repeatedly to the family and pledged to take full responsibility for the child's future treatment and rehabilitation. The administration acknowledged that the incident highlights shortcomings in medical safety management at hospitals and will now conduct a comprehensive review of safety measures at all hospitals. The child's father, Sheng, said his wife is devastated by the tragedy and is unable to accept it.
He questioned how such a foolish mistake could have happened in such a large hospital. He said the child was left with a steel needle inserted into his finger after the surgery, causing him to cry frequently and suffer a lot.
What decision was taken regarding compensation?
Initially, the hospital offered the family 100,000 yuan in compensation and threatened to take the case to court if they failed to reach an agreement. Later, on January 6th, the father announced that both parties had reached an agreement on compensation, although the amount was not disclosed. The incident sparked outrage on Chinese social media, with people questioning how such a mistake could have happened. Many mothers wrote that the child could suffer from this for the rest of his life. This case once again sparked debate about medical safety in China.
