After a Turkish wedding featuring jewelry worth ₹8.64 crore (approximately $1.8 million) sparked controversy, the groom was arrested. The bride, a social media influencer, is also in custody. A video of the incident is going viral.
It was the wedding day, and the bride was dressed up and adorned with jewelry worth crores of rupees. The gold, foreign currency, and cash at the wedding caught everyone's attention. Videos of the wedding quickly went viral on social media, and this royal wedding became a hot topic of discussion. However, the story soon took a turn, leading to a police investigation.
The man known on social media as Vanlı Kara Haydar is said to be Mehmet Fatih Tançalan. He was recently arrested in connection with a social media post. Now, his wife, social media influencer Çağla Öz, has also been detained by police in Istanbul. This action is reportedly part of the ongoing investigation against her husband.
Jewellery worth crores seen at the royal wedding
The couple's wedding had already generated considerable discussion due to the precious gold and other expensive items displayed at the wedding. According to reports, jewelry and other valuables worth approximately 44 million Turkish lira, or approximately ₹86.4 million, were displayed at the wedding. Videos and photos from the wedding were widely shared on social media. Following this, Mehmet Fatih Tanchalan was charged with concealing or presenting criminally obtained assets as legitimate. He was produced before a court, after which the court decided to send him to jail. Now, during this investigation, his wife, Çağla Öz, has also come under police scrutiny.
According to a report by Turkey's Kumuriyat website, an important clarification was made during the interrogation regarding the wedding jewelry. The accused claimed that many of the jewelry displayed at the wedding were not their own, but were rented. It was claimed that the jewelry was borrowed from a known jeweler in the Muradiye area and returned after the wedding. Meanwhile, a report by Sozcu revealed another claim: Çağla Öz is a social media influencer who appears in corporate advertisements. Consequently, some companies sponsored the wedding, providing expensive jewelry and other items as part of the sponsorship. However, court documents state that sufficient documentation was not available to substantiate this claim.
According to the report, the police acted on the instructions of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. At around 3 a.m. on September 8, 2026, a police van arrived at Tanchalan's home in the Muradiye district of the province and took him into custody. He was then taken to the police department's crime branch for questioning and necessary legal procedures. According to Cumhuriyet, Tanchalan also has 25 prior criminal records. However, complete information on these cases is not available, so it would be inaccurate to conclude someone is guilty based solely on the number of records.
According to information currently available, a key reason for the police action is a post made on social media. The prosecution believes this post may be the subject of investigation under Section 301 of the Turkish Criminal Procedure Code. Police are now investigating the post and other related facts. Following her husband's arrest, Çağla Öz also closed her social media accounts. Now, with his detention, the matter is back in the news. The investigation is currently underway, and efforts are being made to determine the true source of the jewellery and other assets worth crores displayed at the wedding.
