Team India’s Veteran Spinner Gauhar Sultana Retires, Last Played in 2014

Just weeks before the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, Indian cricket has witnessed an emotional moment. Gauhar Sultana, one of India’s experienced left-arm spinners, has announced her retirement from international cricket. The 36-year-old had been away from the national side for over a decade, having last played in 2014.

A journey of grit and glory

Gauhar Sultana made her ODI debut against Pakistan in May 2008. In her international career, she bagged 66 wickets in 50 ODIs at an impressive average of 19.39, including three four-wicket hauls. In T20Is, she played 37 matches, claiming 29 wickets at an average of 26.27.

She was also part of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) but couldn’t make much impact, going wicketless in four matches.

Farewell note on Instagram

Announcing her retirement, Gauhar wrote, “Goodbye to cricket with a smile. After years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride and passion, now the time has come to write the most emotional moment of my cricket journey. I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. Playing for India has been an honour.”

She also thanked her teammates, coaches, selectors, and support staff for their unwavering support throughout her career.

In her heartfelt note, she added, “Cricket will always remain in me. Though my playing career has ended, my love for the game is stronger than ever. This is not retirement—it’s just the end of a golden chapter. I look forward to contributing to the game in new ways.”

A silent warrior of Indian cricket

Though she was out of the Indian team for 11 years, Gauhar Sultana’s legacy remains significant. She was one of the most consistent left-arm spinners in the women’s game during her peak years, and her contribution paved the way for the growth of women’s cricket in India.
