Tata Motors' Punch and Nexon SUVs Drive Record Sales, Making Tata Second Largest Carmaker in India

Tata Motors' compact SUV duo, the Punch and Nexon, have created a major stir in the Indian automobile market, significantly boosting the company’s passenger vehicle sales in the second quarter of fiscal 2026 (July-September 2025). The combined sales of these vehicles reached 86,782 units during this period. Specifically, the Nexon was the best-selling car in India in September 2025, while the Punch secured the fifth position in sales rankings.

Alongside these SUVs, Tata’s compact car portfolio, including the Tiago, Tigor, and Altroz, contributed 33,918 units, exceeding last year's figures for the same quarter. This growth underscores robust demand in the small car segment despite the increasing consumer shift towards SUVs. Premium SUVs like the Harrier and Safari also witnessed higher sales, totaling 14,215 units compared to 11,187 units last year, maintaining Tata’s strength in the luxury segment.

September proved to be a pivotal month for Tata amid a fluctuating market, driven by the implementation of GST 2.0, which lowered car prices across segments. While competitors like Hyundai and Mahindra experienced sales declines, Tata’s sales rose from 37,988 units in August to 40,068 units in September 2025. This surge helped Tata overtake Hyundai and Mahindra to become India’s second-largest carmaker after Maruti Suzuki.

Tata’s success story this quarter reflects its strategic product portfolio, pricing advantage, and consumer trust, positioning it for further growth in the competitive automotive landscape.
