A centuries-old Shiva temple located in the Javadumalai Hills of Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, had long been in ruins. Determined to restore its former glory, villagers recently began renovation work. The temple idol was temporarily removed and reinstalled, and excavation started around the sanctum.
But what happened next left everyone stunned.
While digging, workers suddenly noticed a brightly shining object in the soil. Mistaking it for a divine sign or celestial energy, they stopped the work in awe. However, as they dug deeper, the truth emerged — the glitter was not supernatural but historical. A collection of gold coins had been unearthed from beneath the temple grounds.
Discovery of Chola-Era Gold Coins
Upon receiving information, officials from the Archaeological Department rushed to the site and took possession of the coins. Preliminary assessments suggest that these coins could date back to the Chola Empire, one of South India’s most powerful and artistically rich dynasties.
Archaeologists believe this discovery could shed new light on the economic system, trade routes, and temple management practices during the Chola period. Experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) are now studying the coins’ minting techniques, inscriptions, symbols, and imagery to identify which Chola king issued them and to determine their precise age.
Was Treasure Hidden in the Temple?
Local residents believe that during times of war, devotees or temple caretakers may have hidden gold and valuables in the temple premises to protect them from invaders. The villagers, thrilled by the unexpected find, say they never imagined their small temple held such historical importance.
The Archaeological Department has now taken control of the site and, with police assistance, increased security around the temple. Officials plan to extend the excavation to nearby areas and surrounding villages, hoping to uncover more relics that could reveal new chapters of Tamil Nadu’s ancient history.
