Suryakumar Yadav Becomes World’s No.1 T20I Captain After India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Triumph

The India national cricket team created history by defeating the New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. With this victory, captain Suryakumar Yadav achieved his first ICC tournament title as captain, joining an elite list of Indian leaders.

He has now become the third Indian captain to win the T20 World Cup, after legendary captains MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

World’s Most Successful T20I Captain

Following the title victory, Suryakumar Yadav has also achieved another remarkable milestone—he now holds the highest winning percentage among T20 International captains worldwide.

So far under his leadership:

  • Matches as captain: 52

  • Wins: 42

  • Losses: 8

  • No Result: 2

This gives him a win percentage of 80.77%, the highest recorded for any T20I captain.

Surpasses Rohit Sharma

With this record, Suryakumar Yadav has surpassed former Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who previously held the top spot with a winning percentage of 80.65% after winning 50 of 62 matches as captain.

Former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed occupies the third position on the list with a 78.38% win rate.

Another Rohit Record in Sight

Suryakumar Yadav is now also closing in on another record held by Rohit Sharma—the most T20I wins as India’s captain.

  • Rohit Sharma: 50 wins as captain

  • Suryakumar Yadav: 42 wins

This means Surya needs just nine more victories to break Rohit’s record and become India’s most successful T20I captain in terms of total wins.

Future Outlook

After leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed he plans to continue playing and captaining the team, raising the possibility that more records could fall in the coming years.
