Many kinds of claims are made on social media. One such claim is currently being circulated. In a video, fitness coach and influencer Priyank Mehta claims that wearing a bra at night can increase the risk of breast cancer.
In this video, he advises women not to wear bras at night to avoid any risks. In the meantime, let's see how much truth there is to this doctor's claim.
What is being claimed on social media?
In this video, he explains that our bodies work to eliminate toxins accumulated overnight. Lymph nodes in the armpits, breasts, and chest cleanse the body. He further explains that sleeping in a bra that is too tight or has wires can disrupt this process. This can lead to swelling, fluid retention, and damage to breast tissue over time.
What does medical science say?
While this claim is serious, medical science doesn't believe it to be true. This theory first emerged in 1995. While Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Griessmeier described a link between bras and breast cancer in their book, "Dressed to Kill," experts dismissed the claims made in their second book, published in 2017.
According to the American Cancer Society report
, there is no medical evidence to suggest that wearing a bra restricts lymph flow or causes cancer. Similarly, the US National Institutes of Health has clearly stated that there is no link between wearing a bra or breast implants and the risk of breast cancer.
UK Cancer Research's claim The
UK Cancer Research Foundation also says that not much research has been done on this topic, as there is no scientific evidence to show a link between bras and cancer. Similarly, existing studies have also found no such link. A large study of over 1,500 women in 2014 also found that bra-wearing habits, such as how long you wear it, the use of underwire, or the age at which you started wearing it, were not associated with the risk of breast cancer.
What does the doctor say?
According to a report by firstcheck_in, Dr. Shuaib Zaidi, a surgical oncologist at Max Super Speciality Hospital, also refuted this claim. He said that wearing a bra, day or night, does not increase the risk of cancer. Lymph flows through the breast in various ways. Therefore, even if pressure is applied to one area, it does not pose any risk.
