No matter how big the target or how intense the pressure, when Shreyas Iyer is at the crease, the result almost feels predictable. The Punjab Kings captain has emerged as one of the most reliable finishers in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, consistently guiding his team to victory in high-pressure chases.
In the clash against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Iyer once again showcased his brilliance, scoring a composed 66 off just 35 balls. His innings, combined with Prabhsimran Singh’s explosive unbeaten 80, helped Punjab chase down a challenging total with ease. The duo stitched together a match-winning century partnership, underlining Iyer’s calm leadership and finishing ability.
What makes Iyer’s performance even more impressive is his consistency. He has now registered three consecutive half-centuries, all while chasing. He scored 50 off 29 balls against Chennai Super Kings, followed by an unbeaten 69 off 33 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and then this crucial 66 against Mumbai. Each of these innings directly contributed to Punjab’s victories, proving his impact goes beyond just numbers.
Iyer’s dominance in run chases isn’t limited to this season. Since IPL 2025, he has amassed 458 runs in 11 innings while chasing, at an outstanding average of 65.42 and a striking strike rate of over 180. During this period, he has scored six half-centuries, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure consistently.
Interestingly, his performances have drawn comparisons with Virat Kohli, who is widely regarded as one of the best chasers in cricket. Since IPL 2024, Kohli has recorded eight fifty-plus scores in chases, all resulting in wins for his team. Iyer is not far behind, with seven such performances—each ending in victory for Punjab Kings.
With sharp captaincy, dependable batting, and the temperament to handle pressure situations, Shreyas Iyer has firmly established himself as the backbone of Punjab’s success this season and one of the most dangerous players in a run chase.
