Eetha: Even before its theatrical release, Shraddha Kapoor's upcoming film Eetha has become the subject of controversy. A section of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and members of the family of legendary Lavani artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar have reportedly questioned the film's title, arguing that it should more directly reflect the iconic performer's identity.
Title Sparks Debate Soon After Teaser Release
The first teaser of Eetha generated considerable attention among moviegoers, but it has also triggered a debate over the film's title.
According to media reports, the NCP's Film and Cultural Department has objected to the use of the title Eetha, stating that a film based on the life of celebrated folk artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar should carry a title that more clearly represents her name and legacy.
The issue has quickly gained attention in Maharashtra, where Vithabai is widely regarded as one of the state's most influential performers in the traditional Lavani and Tamasha art forms.
Family Members Also Reportedly Support the Demand
Reports indicate that members of Vithabai Narayangaonkar's family have also supported the request to reconsider the title.
According to the reported statements, family members believe that naming the film "Vitha" or "Vithabai" would better honour the legendary artist and preserve her cultural identity.
The reported support includes Vithabai's sons, Kailash Narayangaonkar and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, as well as her grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar.
NCP Seeks Respectful Representation
Commenting on the controversy, Babasaheb Patil, Maharashtra State President of the NCP's Film and Cultural Department, reportedly stated that the organisation believes it is important to ensure that Vithabai Narayangaonkar's life and achievements are portrayed with dignity and respect.
The party has expressed the view that the title should appropriately represent the artist whose life inspired the film.
As of now, director Laxman Utekar and Maddock Films, the production house behind the project, have not issued an official public response regarding the objections.
Film Celebrates the Life of a Legendary Folk Artist
Eetha is inspired by the life of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, one of Maharashtra's most celebrated Lavani and Tamasha performers.
Known for her exceptional stage presence and contribution to Indian folk theatre, Vithabai entertained audiences for decades and received national recognition for her work, including honours from the President of India during her lifetime.
The film aims to bring her inspiring journey to the big screen while highlighting the cultural significance of Lavani and Tamasha in Maharashtra.
Teaser Highlights a Dramatic Moment
The recently released teaser recreates one of the most talked-about episodes associated with Vithabai's life.
In the film, Shraddha Kapoor portrays the legendary performer and is shown continuing her stage performance despite experiencing labour pain. The sequence depicts her giving birth backstage before returning to complete the performance.
The scene has generated significant discussion online. However, historical accounts regarding the exact events surrounding the incident have been described differently in various reports, with some suggesting that the performance was interrupted to allow Vithabai to receive medical attention and rest.
