Shock for SUV Lovers! Toyota Discontinues the Top Variant of This Powerful SUV

In a move that may disappoint SUV enthusiasts, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has discontinued the Leader Edition of the Toyota Fortuner in the Indian market. With this change, the GR-S now stands as the most premium and sporty variant in the Fortuner lineup. Alongside the discontinuation, Toyota has also revised Fortuner prices upward starting January 2026.

Why was the Leader Edition discontinued?

According to Toyota, the decision is part of a strategy to sharpen focus on premium, performance-oriented trims. By streamlining the lineup, the company aims to channel demand toward top-end offerings—most notably the GR-S, which now serves as the flagship Fortuner in India.

New prices and available variants

With the January 2026 update, Fortuner prices have increased by ₹51,400 to ₹74,000, depending on the variant and transmission. Despite the change, the Fortuner continues to offer a wide range of configurations:

  • Petrol and diesel engines

  • Manual and automatic transmissions

  • 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains

GR-S becomes the most expensive Fortuner

The Fortuner GR-S—already positioned as the sportiest trim—now carries a price of ₹49.59 lakh (ex-showroom). It is not only the most expensive Fortuner variant but also the one that has seen the largest price hike in the latest revision.

Fortuner Legender also gets pricier

The Fortuner Legender hasn’t been spared either. Its prices have risen by ₹71,000, taking the starting price to ₹42.17 lakh (ex-showroom).

What this means for buyers

Toyota’s move signals a clear intent to position the Fortuner more firmly in the premium SUV space, with fewer variants and a stronger emphasis on high-end trims. For buyers, this means higher prices but a lineup that’s more focused on sporty design and premium appeal.
