The much-anticipated release of the Surya and Trisha Krishnan starrer Karuppu hit a major roadblock today, May 14, 2026. While fans across Tamil Nadu were prepared for a 9:00 AM kickoff, a last-minute disruption left theaters empty and ticket-holders in the dark.
Despite receiving official special permission for an early morning screening from the newly appointed Chief Minister and actor, Thiru Joseph Vijay, the show failed to materialize. The sudden cancellation has left both the audience and the film's team reeling.
A Frustrating Setback
The news of the cancellation was confirmed by producer SR Prabhu, who took to social media to issue an apology for the "unavoidable situation" that prevented the morning show from going ahead as planned.
This development is particularly surprising given the excitement surrounding the approval. Only days prior, the production house, Dream Warrior Pictures, had publicly thanked Chief Minister Vijay for his support, stating: "Thank you to our Honorable Chief Minister Thiru Joseph Vijay for granting special permission for a 9 a.m. show... The first day first show will begin at 9 a.m."
Director’s Message of Faith
As rumors swirl regarding the cause—with some reports citing potential financial hurdles—the film’s director, RJ Balaji, took to social media to address the fans directly. Acknowledging the long and arduous journey the film has faced, he remained hopeful that the issues would be settled.
"Dearest fans, I don't have a concrete answer to the current situation. Producers are doing their best to solve the hurdles. This film has always had hurdles, and somehow God has made us sail through all that and here we are after 32 months. This time as well, I have faith," RJ Balaji posted on X (formerly Twitter).
What’s Next for 'Karuppu'?
While the producers have yet to release a formal statement regarding the specific reasons behind the cancellation or the status of upcoming screenings, the industry and fans are watching closely. The project, which has been in the making for 32 months, has faced various challenges throughout its production, but the team remains optimistic that Karuppu will eventually reach its audience.
For now, fans are left waiting for clarity as the production team works behind the scenes to resolve the situation and get the film back on the big screen.
