The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set for a major leadership change. Reports suggest that BCCI President Roger Binny may soon resign, with Vice President Rajiv Shukla taking over as acting president. A meeting of board officials was recently chaired by Shukla on 27 August, where sponsorship matters were discussed following Dream11’s withdrawal.
Roger Binny, who replaced Sourav Ganguly as BCCI president in 2022, has now reached the age of 70, making him ineligible to continue under BCCI’s constitution. The rules clearly state that any office-bearer must vacate their post upon crossing the age of 70. Shukla, who has served as vice president since 2020, will hold the position temporarily until fresh elections are conducted.
Binny, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, was the third former cricketer to become BCCI president. His exit comes ahead of BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections, scheduled next month. Although the National Sports Governance Act has been approved, it has not yet been formally implemented, meaning the elections will proceed under the existing Lodha Committee–based constitution.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has clarified that both BCCI and state association elections will continue under the current framework until the new law is enforced.
