The historic India-Afghanistan Test match in Mullanpur didn't just mark India's return to the longest format after a six-month hiatus—it marked the dawn of a new international career.

Young left-arm orthodox spinner Manav Suthar officially became the 319th player to represent India in Test cricket. In an emotional pre-match ceremony, star leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav handed the 23-year-old his coveted 'Baggy Blue' cap, making Suthar the first specialist spinner to debut for Team India since 2021.

The Selection Dilemma: Suthar vs. Dubey

A day prior to the match, Head Coach Gautam Gambhir revealed that the team management was torn between two incredibly talented 23-year-old left-arm spin all-rounders: Rajasthan's Manav Suthar and Vidarbha's Harsh Dubey.

Why Did Suthar Get the Nod?

With such identical statistics, Team India relied on tactical and physical advantages to make their final decision:

• The Height and Bounce Factor: Suthar is slightly taller than Dubey, granting him a higher release point. On a fresh Mullanpur deck, this allows him to extract uncomfortable, steep bounce that troubles batsmen.

• Deceptive Air Time: Suthar’s bowling is characterized by a high revolution rate on the ball. This heavy over-spin makes it incredibly difficult for batsmen to judge the trajectory, speed, and sharp turn in the air.

• The Shubman Gill Connection: Suthar has spent the last two IPL seasons with the Gujarat Titans under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. Having faced and observed him extensively in the nets, Captain Gill had firsthand knowledge of Suthar’s match-winning capabilities.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Shubman Gill opted for a balanced, spin-heavy attack to counter Afghanistan. The team management decided to field three spinners and two frontline pacers, putting an end to all lineup speculations by including Mohammed Siraj.
