As the government urged customers to switch from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas (PNG), an old scam has resurfaced. This time, fraudsters have a new target: piped natural gas (PNG) users. After flooding inboxes with fake electricity bill letters, scammers have now turned to IGL gas connections. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has officially advised customers to remain alert.
How does the scam work?
You receive a text or phone call informing you that your gas service will be disconnected tonight if you don't pay the outstanding amount immediately. The email contains a fake IGL hotline number. When you contact them, the fraudsters trick you into making an online payment – and your money is gone.
A common fake email reads: "Your IGL GAS connection will be disconnected tonight at 07:30 PM. Contact IGL Officer [name] at [number]." Callers impersonate IGL representatives, intimidating and pressuring victims to make an immediate payment.
How to protect yourself?
Stay calm. Panic is a scammer's strongest weapon.
Don't call back. Never dial the number provided in the message.
Check for mistakes. IGL's official communications have a consistent format, but fake communications contain grammatical errors.
Make payments only through official methods. For any payments, please visit igl.co.in directly.
Never click on unwanted links or download software from suspicious communications.

In a recent social media post, IGL said, "Be alert! Scammers are sending fake messages pretending to be IGL. IGL never asks for personal details, payments, or makes urgent calls from unknown numbers. Always verify the source before answering. Stay safe, stay aware."
If you've already paid your bill, ignore such messages completely. If in doubt, contact IGL only through verified contact details.
A "FRAUD ALERT" pop-up is already visible on the official website of IGL informing PNG consumers about the fraud.
