On his historic first visit to Croatia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended India’s cultural diplomacy through gifts that reflect the country’s rich heritage. During his meeting with the Croatian leadership, PM Modi presented two exquisite handcrafted items—a Pattachitra painting from Odisha to the President, and a silver candle stand from Rajasthan to the Prime Minister.
These gifts were not just symbols of goodwill but also a tribute to India’s centuries-old traditions in art and craftsmanship.
Pattachitra Painting to Croatian President Zoran Milanovic
PM Modi gifted President Zoran Milanovic a stunning Pattachitra painting, a traditional art form from Odisha known for its vibrant colors, intricate detailing, and mythological storytelling. The term "Pattachitra" derives from the Sanskrit words patta (cloth) and chitra (picture).
This style of painting often illustrates tales from Lord Krishna's life, Jagannath culture, and other Hindu epics. What makes this art unique is the use of natural dyes and handcrafted brushes, with each piece being entirely hand-painted on cloth. Pattachitra is not just a painting—it’s a piece of spiritual and artistic heritage.
Silver Candle Stand to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković
To Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, PM Modi gifted a handcrafted silver candle stand from Rajasthan, a state renowned for its traditional metalwork. Made by skilled artisans, this elegant piece showcases delicate floral and geometric motifs, inspired by royal palaces and temples.
Crafted using techniques passed down through generations, the candle stand reflects the opulence of Rajasthani design, especially from cities like Jaipur and Udaipur, known for their mastery in silver artistry. The gift not only symbolizes luxury but also India’s deep-rooted artisan legacy.
