Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on June 24, even as global crude oil markets continue to react to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Amid speculation over fuel quality and ethanol blending, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has dismissed what it called misleading claims circulating on social media regarding Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP). In a statement issued on June 23, the ministry said the Ethanol Blending Programme is scientifically validated and subject to continuous government monitoring.

"The Government of India has observed misleading and unsubstantiated content being shared online regarding ethanol-blended petrol. Some outdated videos and images are also being recirculated, potentially creating unnecessary concerns among consumers," the ministry said.

Ethanol Blending Programme Explained

Launched in 2003, the Ethanol Blending Programme aims to reduce India's dependence on imported crude oil, strengthen energy security, and promote cleaner fuel alternatives. The initiative has been implemented in phases, culminating in the nationwide rollout of E20 fuel, which contains 20 per cent ethanol, from 2023 onwards.

Petrol prices continued to remain above ₹102 per litre in the national capital. Kolkata recorded one of the highest rates among metro cities, while Hyderabad remained the most expensive among the major urban centres.
