Concerns over petrol and diesel quality have recently surfaced on social media, with several posts raising questions about fuel standards at petrol pumps. In response, state-owned oil companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) carried out extensive surprise inspections across their networks.
The companies have stated that the fuel available at their retail outlets meets the required quality standards and that no major cases of adulteration, contamination, or quality violations were found during the inspections.
Why Did Fuel Quality Become a Topic of Discussion?
In recent days, several claims related to petrol and diesel quality have been circulating online. To address these concerns and maintain consumer confidence, oil companies increased monitoring at petrol pumps across the country.
The companies have also advised customers not to rely only on unverified social media claims and encouraged them to report complaints through official customer support channels.
Details of Inspections by Oil Companies
| Company | Inspection Details | Findings |
|---|---|---|
| IOC | Around 10,000 surprise inspections and more than 8,500 quality tests conducted in the last week | No major quality issues detected |
| BPCL | 932 surprise inspections, 111 quality control cell checks, and 50 mobile lab tests between July 3 and July 13 | No adulteration, contamination, or quality violations found |
| HPCL | 2,173 surprise inspections for ethanol blending compliance, 1,385 regular inspections, 93 quality assurance checks, and 49 mobile lab tests | No fuel quality issues or irregularities detected |
IOC Emphasizes Zero-Tolerance Policy
Indian Oil stated that maintaining fuel quality is one of its top priorities. The company said that regular inspections, surprise checks, and scientific testing are conducted at petrol pumps across the country.
IOC also highlighted that it follows a zero-tolerance policy toward adulteration, contamination, or violations of fuel quality rules. If any irregularity is detected through inspections or customer complaints, strict action is taken against the concerned dealer.
What Should Customers Do If They Have Concerns?
Oil companies have advised customers to follow these steps if they suspect any issue with fuel quality:
-
Avoid reaching conclusions based only on viral social media posts.
-
Contact the official customer care service of the concerned oil company for complaints.
-
Keep fuel bills or receipts safely for reference during complaint registration.
According to IOC, BPCL, and HPCL, multiple layers of monitoring—including field inspections, laboratory testing, mobile lab checks, and sample analysis—are in place to ensure petrol and diesel supplied through their networks meet prescribed quality standards.
