Road users across the country will no longer be able to pay toll charges in cash from April 1, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is moving to a fully digital payment system. In a major step toward modernizing highway travel, the NHAI will completely ban cash payments at toll plazas across the country.
Starting April 1, commuters will be required to pay toll charges only through digital methods like FASTag or UPI. This move aims to make toll collection on national highways and expressways more efficient and transparent.
Trains will move faster
Officials believe that a fully digital system will allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas more quickly, eliminating long lines and saving travel time. Faster processing at toll booths is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and vehicular pollution.
This change may cause inconvenience to some travelers, especially those who are not ready to make digital payments. Furthermore, vehicles that do not have a valid FASTag or do not have sufficient balance may face fines or be stopped at toll plazas.
Instant payment option through UPI
In such cases, commuters will have the option to make instant payments using UPI by scanning a QR code at the toll booth. Officials warn that network issues may occasionally disrupt such transactions, leading to delays.
To avoid disruptions, passengers are advised to ensure their FASTag is active, properly linked to their bank account, and has sufficient balance before commencing their journey. Alternatively, have a working UPI app on their smartphone.
