PAN and Aadhaar have become two of the most important documents for financial and tax-related work in India. From filing income tax returns to completing KYC, people frequently need to use both documents.
But simply having a PAN and Aadhaar is not enough. If your details are incorrect or the two documents are not properly linked, you may face problems during important financial transactions.
Here's how you can check your status and what to do if something is wrong.
How to check whether your PAN is linked with Aadhaar
You can check the status online through the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal.
Open the official Income Tax e-filing website and look for the option to check Aadhaar-PAN linking status. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number when prompted.
The portal will tell you whether the two documents are successfully linked.
You don't need to visit an office simply to check the status.
What if your name is different on PAN and Aadhaar?
A mismatch in your name, date of birth or other details can prevent successful linking.
For example, if your PAN contains "Rahul Kumar" while your Aadhaar contains "Rahul K. Kumar", the system may not be able to match the records automatically.
In such a situation, first identify which document contains the incorrect information.
Correct the details before trying again
If the information on Aadhaar is incorrect, you can use the appropriate Aadhaar update process.
Similarly, PAN details can be corrected through the authorised PAN service providers.
Once the details are corrected, you can try the linking process again.
Check your date of birth carefully
Date of birth is another important detail.
Even a small difference between the two records can cause problems. Check whether the day, month and year are identical on both documents.
If your date of birth is incorrect on one document, get it corrected rather than repeatedly attempting to link the documents.
Don't share your PAN and Aadhaar details with strangers
Your PAN and Aadhaar are sensitive identity documents.
Avoid sending photographs or copies to unknown people through WhatsApp, email or social media. If you need to submit a document for a legitimate purpose, verify who is requesting it and why it is required.
Where appropriate, use masked Aadhaar or other privacy-preserving options instead of unnecessarily sharing your full Aadhaar number.
Be careful with fake PAN-Aadhaar messages
Scammers sometimes send messages claiming that your PAN will be blocked or your bank account will be suspended unless you immediately click a link and complete verification.
Don't panic.
Instead of using the link provided in an SMS, email or WhatsApp message, open the official Income Tax Department or UIDAI website yourself and check the status there.
Keep your mobile number updated
A mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and the contact details associated with your financial accounts can be important for receiving authentication messages and alerts.
If your mobile number has changed, update your records through the appropriate official channels.
One simple check can prevent bigger problems
PAN-Aadhaar issues often become noticeable when a person is trying to complete an urgent task such as filing an income tax return, completing KYC or carrying out a financial transaction.
Checking your details in advance can save time and prevent last-minute complications.
Most importantly, use only official government websites for PAN and Aadhaar-related services and never provide OTPs, passwords or banking credentials to anyone claiming they need them for verification.
