The demand for rugged SUVs with proper 4x4 and all-wheel-drive systems is rising fast in India, especially among off-road enthusiasts. Automakers are responding to this trend with a lineup of exciting new launches. Brands like Mahindra & Mahindra, MG Motor, and Tata Motors are gearing up to introduce feature-packed SUVs designed for both adventure and comfort. Here’s a closer look at what’s coming.
The updated Mahindra Scorpio-N is expected to arrive around August, bringing refreshed styling and upgraded features. It will continue with the proven 4XPLOR 4x4 system, offering terrain modes like Snow, Sand, Mud, and Normal, along with a low-range gearbox. Powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 172 bhp and 400 Nm torque, the SUV will also get premium additions such as Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, and dual large infotainment screens. Pricing is likely to remain in the range of ₹13.80 lakh to ₹24.80 lakh.
Alongside it, the new Mahindra Thar will also hit the market. Known for its hardcore off-road capability, the updated Thar will feature cosmetic tweaks like a redesigned grille and new alloy wheels. Mechanically, it will retain its existing 4x4 setup with engine options including a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol. Expected pricing could fall between ₹15 lakh and ₹18 lakh, making it a strong choice for adventure seekers.
MG is also stepping into the serious off-road space with the upcoming MG Magester. This ladder-frame SUV is designed for extreme terrains, featuring triple differential locks, multiple terrain modes, and crawl control technology. It will be powered by a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine delivering 215 bhp and 478 Nm torque. With a water-wading capacity of up to 810 mm, this SUV is clearly built for tough conditions. Its expected price range is around ₹45 lakh to ₹50 lakh.
On the electric front, Tata Sierra EV is set to make a comeback in a modern avatar. The EV version is expected to feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, making it capable beyond just city driving. With battery options between 65 kWh and 75 kWh, it could offer a driving range of over 450–500 km. Pricing is expected to be between ₹18 lakh and ₹25 lakh, positioning it as a futuristic yet practical SUV.
Overall, the upcoming months look exciting for SUV lovers in India. Whether you prefer traditional diesel-powered off-road machines or modern electric AWD vehicles, there will be something for everyone.
