In the glittering world of Bollywood, where fame often comes with privilege, some actors carve their path purely through grit and talent. One such icon is Naseeruddin Shah — a name synonymous with powerful performances and meaningful cinema. Yet, few know that this three-time National Award-winning actor was once paid only Rs 7.50 for his first film.
Born on July 20, 1950, in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, Naseeruddin Shah grew up in a conservative household. His father, Ali Mohammad Shah, wanted him to become an officer, but young Naseer’s interests lay elsewhere. He wasn’t particularly drawn to academics and instead found himself fascinated by the world of acting. However, his decision to pursue cinema wasn’t welcomed at home. Even the legendary Dilip Kumar once advised him to return home rather than chase an uncertain dream.
But Naseeruddin Shah’s determination was stronger than any discouragement. His first brush with cinema came in 1967, when he appeared as an extra in the film Aman, directed by Mohan Kumar. Barely 16 or 17 years old at the time, Naseer was part of a funeral crowd scene for Rajendra Kumar’s character. “I took the role very seriously,” he once recalled in an interview, “and I was paid Rs 7.50 for it — enough for me to manage for two weeks.”
What began as a background role soon turned into one of the most respected careers in Indian cinema. Naseeruddin Shah made his debut as a lead actor in 1975 with Nishant, co-starring Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. His nuanced performances and deep understanding of human emotion quickly set him apart from the mainstream crowd.
Over the years, he went on to win three National Awards — for Sparsh, Paar, and Iqbal — cementing his place as one of India’s finest actors. Beyond awards, his career stands as a testament to perseverance, passion, and the belief that true talent will always find its spotlight, no matter how humble the beginning.
