Why is Naraka Chaturdashi celebrated?
The ancient scriptures state that over time, the terror of Narakasura had become widespread. His terror had spread terror throughout all three worlds. Narakasura had forcibly captured sixteen thousand women. At that time, Lord Krishna, the protector of the universe, fought a fierce battle with Narakasura. Lord Krishna emerged victorious in this battle.
The battle between Lord Krishna and Narakasura took place on the Chaturdashi (fourteenth day) of the dark fortnight of the month of Kartika. Lord Krishna killed Narakasura and freed sixteen thousand women. Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated every year on this auspicious occasion.
Significance of Narak Chaturdashi
Narak Chaturdashi holds special significance in Sanatan Dharma. On this day, devotees wake up before sunrise and clean their homes. After completing their daily chores, they bathe and meditate. They then bathe with water mixed with the Ganges River. If convenient, they also bathe with water mixed with Apamarg.
It is said that bathing in water containing Apamarg on Narak Chaturdashi frees one from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly. After this, one worships Lord Krishna with devotion. Worshiping Lord Krishna on this day fulfills every wish.
