Mumbai Airport Scare Averted: Air India and IndiGo Aircraft Collide on Taxiway, All Passengers Safe

A major mishap was narrowly avoided at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport when aircraft operated by Air India and IndiGo collided on the runway area. Both planes were carrying a full load of passengers at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all passengers are safe.

The incident occurred during routine ground operations. Air India flight AI 2732, arriving from Coimbatore, was in a pushback position and preparing for take-off, while IndiGo flight 6E 791, which had landed from Hyderabad, was taxiing towards the parking bay. During this movement, the right wingtips of both Airbus A320 aircraft came into contact, resulting in a minor collision.

The impact caused a brief jolt inside the aircraft, leading to momentary panic among passengers. However, airport authorities and ground staff responded swiftly, ensuring that the situation was brought under control immediately. As a precautionary safety measure, both aircraft were grounded after the incident.

Passengers were safely deboarded, and the airlines initiated arrangements to transport them to their destinations using alternate flights. Initial inspections revealed damage to the wings of both aircraft, prompting further technical checks.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed, and a detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the incident. According to preliminary technical details, the collision occurred when the Air India aircraft (VT-TYF) was moving from Taxiway C1 to M4, while the IndiGo aircraft (VT-IFV) was entering Taxiway B1. Investigators are examining whether there was any lapse in ground clearance procedures or coordination.

Both airlines issued official statements confirming the incident. Air India stated that its aircraft was grounded as a precaution and that a technical investigation has been initiated. IndiGo also confirmed the wingtip contact and said the aircraft is undergoing maintenance inspection. Both airlines reiterated that passenger safety remains their highest priority.
