As pleasant as the rainy season is, it can be equally harmful for the body. Because during this time the risk of some problems and infections increases. Let us know what to do and what to eat to avoid them.
Barsaat ke din aaye, mulakaat ke din aaye…. You might have heard these lyrics of the song. The song is romantic and it talks about meeting. But it is also true that in this season bacteria, viruses and fungus also become desperate to meet us and make us sick. In the monsoon season, even a little carelessness can lead to problems related to skin, hair, eyes and stomach. Fever, cold and cough are very common. How to stay safe from them and what to do if you get sick?
If there is greenery all around, the mind also feels green. In this green season, the presence of many types of insects and disease-causing organisms also increases. Generally, in extreme cold or extreme heat, the activity of viruses, bacteria etc. that make us sick is less. The rainy season is favorable for them. They start spreading diseases.
Keep an eye on the eyes

Forgive me for my rudeness about the eyes. But when a virus gets a chance, it spreads infection. There is a membrane in the eye called conjunctiva. When it gets swollen due to infection, it is called conjunctivitis. In common language, it is also called eye flu or pink eye.
How to identify conjunctivitis
- Redness of the eyes
- Watery eyes i.e. excessive tearing
- itching, burning, or stinging sensation
- sticky discharge
- discomfort from bright light
- Sticky eyes (sticky eyelids when you wake up in the morning)
When to see a doctor
- Difficulty in seeing i.e. seeing blurred vision.
- Become more sensitive to light.
- There is no sign of improvement within 3-4 days.
Important things to protect yourself
- If someone has this problem then do not share towel, handkerchief or pillow.
- Wash eyes with water 5-6 times a day.
- Avoid going to the swimming pool in this season.
- Wear good quality sunglasses to avoid bright sunlight, dust and dirt.
- Pour cold water on the eyes or place a cold compress on them.
- Boil water and let it cool down to normal temperature, then dip cotton in it and gently clean the corners of the eyes.
Skin Care
Fungal Infections

Although this is a minor problem, its treatment is also easy, but if the treatment is not done properly, then it becomes a big problem. This happens due to excessive sweating, moisture in the skin or soap remaining in the clothes. In this, round rashes like rings are formed on the skin, which spread outwards. These cause itching and it can spread from one person to another.
Treatment: Apply antifungal cream like Clotrimazole. In severe cases, Griseofulvin or Terbinafine tablets can be taken. If the infection is in the hair or nails, then medicines like Fluconazole are also given. Take medicines only on the advice of a doctor.
Boils and pimples
Boils and pus-filled pimples are more visible in the rainy season. Usually it is associated with eating more mangoes, whereas the real reason is moisture and bacteria which attack the skin. This kind of problem arises because of them. Many times, if these are not treated, they spoil the skin as well as the night's sleep.
Treatment: Apply antibiotic cream containing mupirocin on such pimples. Clindamycin lotion can also be applied if needed. Also use Acneaid, Acnex etc. for pimples or acne.
Prickly heat/rashes
Due to excess moisture in the skin, bacteria or fungus grows rapidly, which can cause prickly heat or rashes. These occur especially in skin folds like armpits, thighs, stomach or waist.
Treatment: Stay in a cool environment, like AC or cooler. Apply light compress of ice on the affected area and apply calamine lotion. If itching is severe, you can take antiitching medicine on the advice of the doctor.
Hair will not fall
The problem of hair fall starts in this season. If we keep the hair dry and clean, then this problem can be reduced to a great extent.
Fungus is also a reason
Due to moisture in the hair during rainy season, fungal infection can occur, especially in children. Dandruff is also a type of fungal infection. Mild dandruff is considered normal, but if it is excessive, it weakens the hair roots and causes hair fall.
Treatment: To get relief from dandruff, use shampoos containing itoconazole, zinc pyrithione (ZPTO). These are generic medicines. Applying oil to the hair can increase the infection, so avoid applying oil and consult a doctor immediately.
- Hair is made of protein, so consume plenty of protein-rich foods like milk, curd, cheese, pulses, egg whites, fish and chicken.
- Make sure to include vitamin C (papaya, mango etc.) and antioxidants (apple, nuts, dry fruits), green vegetables and sea food in your diet.
- Do not let your hair stay wet for a long time as this can weaken your hair and cause it to fall.
- Be sure to wash your hair twice a week. If needed, you can wash it three or four times.
- If you don't want to wash your hair, wear a shower cap before bathing.
- After washing your hair, dry them thoroughly. Dry them by maintaining a little distance from the dryer.
Tightness in the throat

When there is a sore throat,
it is usually due to a viral infection. When the immunity is weak or we do not take necessary precautions, the virus spreads quickly. In this, the voice becomes heavy and there may also be pain in the throat.
Prevention
- As the weather changes, dress according to the weather. Keep the body covered at night, full-sleeved clothes and covering the legs are a must.
- Stop drinking cold water and start drinking lukewarm water. This also helps in losing weight. Completely avoid cold things from the fridge.
- It is important for fresh air to come into the room. Do not keep the room completely closed.
Remedy
- Keep sipping hot water.
- Gargle by adding one spoon of Betadine or one spoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water 2-3 times a day.
- Eat warm food and avoid cold or oily foods.
Cough
When virus or dust particles from pollution reach the body, the immune system becomes active. In this process, the windpipe and lungs can swell, which can cause cough.
Dry and wet cough: The body reacts in two ways. When antibodies fight against the virus and there is no leakage, then there is a dry cough. But when the body produces mucus to remove the virus, then the cough becomes wet. If you keep eating cold things, the infection increases. First there may be a dry cough, then wet or first wet, then dry cough.
Remedy: Drink 2 to 3 liters of lukewarm water throughout the day. Avoid fried, spicy food.
Fear of fever
Nowadays, fever is common due to infection or problems caused by mosquito bites etc. If the fever is more than 100 Fahrenheit, then you can take paracetamol. However, in case of any kind of fever, go to the doctor and get the test done only on his advice.
...then apply a wet bandage soaked in water

When the fever goes above 102, along with giving paracetamol, a wet bandage soaked in water should be kept on the head and forehead. Since it may take about 1 hour for the medicine to start working, the fever may increase during this time. To prevent the fever from rising too much, use a wet bandage soaked in water.
Use a wet bandage like this
- If the fever is above 102 Fahrenheit and the patient is not in much trouble, then place a cloth bandage soaked in plain water on the head.
- Keep the bandage on for 2 to 3 minutes at a time. Then wet it and spread it on the forehead. Do this for 10 to 15 minutes.
- If the fever has reached more than 103 and the patient is not feeling cold, then a large towel can be soaked in normal or cold water and placed on the back, chest etc.
- Fever profile test: When the fever has been going on for 4-5 days and the symptoms do not give any conclusion about the type of fever the patient may be suffering from, then the patient can undergo a fever profile test. There are several tests in this, such as CBC, SGPT, CRP, Dengue, etc. Cost: Rs 600-4,000
- Report: Within 24 hours to 4 days.
Stomach gurgling
During the rainy season, contaminated food or dirty water can cause stomach infection i.e. gastroenteritis. In this, the patient may feel frequent vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, fever or weakness in the body.
Diarrhea: This is a form of gastroenteritis. Both vomiting and diarrhea can occur in this, but sometimes only diarrhea occurs which can be more dangerous. Diarrhea is of three types:
Viral diarrhea
is often caused by a virus in small children. It causes stomach cramps, loose motions, vomiting and fatigue.
Treatment: Give ORS solution or sugar-salt sherbet repeatedly. Domperidone can be taken to prevent vomiting, Racecadotril for diarrhea and Meftal Spas for stomach cramps as per the doctor's advice.
Bacterial diarrhea
can cause high fever, pus or blood in the stool.
Treatment: Antibiotic medicines are given. Probiotics are also given to patients who take antibiotics frequently. Curd is a good natural probiotic.
Protozoal diarrhea
Treatment: Antiamebic medicines are given in this, which should be taken only after consulting a doctor.
Keep in mind: It is a misconception that food or water should not be given in diarrhea. Continuously give light and liquid things to the patient, such as ORS solution, coconut water, lemonade mixed with salt and sugar, buttermilk, lassi, lentil water, thin khichdi or porridge. Avoid fried and heavy food only.
This is how you will stay healthy in monsoon
Wash fruits and vegetables properly Leafy vegetables or fruits may contain insects and larvae. First wash with clean hot water. After this, if possible, wash in lukewarm water. This reduces bacteria and chemicals. Do not eat raw or half-cooked food.
Drink only boiled water
Water-borne diseases are on the rise these days. Drink only filtered or boiled water. Wash the bottles in the fridge regularly. Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day. Keeping the body hydrated reduces infections.
Keep the house clean, avoid mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes and insects breed rapidly in the rain. Get pest control spray done, get nets installed on the windows. Do not let water accumulate on the balcony or roof. Make it a habit to sleep under a mosquito net. This is a good habit.
Do physical activity
If it is difficult to walk outside in the rain, do yoga or light exercise at home. This maintains immunity and sweating also removes toxins from the body. Try to do this regularly.
Take special care of children
Avoid children from getting wet in the rain. Ask them to play indoor games. If you send them outside, make them wear full-sleeved shirts and full pants so that they can avoid mosquitoes. Do not take children to the swimming pool as there is a high risk of infection there. Wear
Clothes that are light and airy.
Wear light, loose and airy clothes during the rainy season. Avoid wearing tight clothes or clothes whose color fades. Change clothes immediately if they get wet. Wear open footwear but wash your feet if they get wet.
