The Union Cabinet has approved the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with an outlay of ₹62,500 crore, marking one of the biggest initiatives aimed at strengthening India's electronics manufacturing sector. The scheme is designed to boost domestic production, attract fresh investments, increase exports, and create large-scale employment opportunities across the country.

The government expects the scheme to encourage both Indian and global companies to expand their manufacturing operations in India. By supporting the production of mobile phones and related components, the initiative aims to strengthen the country's position as a global electronics manufacturing hub while reducing dependence on imports.

A major focus of the scheme is job creation. As new manufacturing facilities are established and existing factories expand, demand is expected to rise for engineers, technicians, machine operators, quality control professionals, logistics staff, warehouse workers, and other skilled and semi-skilled employees. This could generate employment opportunities across several states.

The scheme is also expected to benefit Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Suppliers of electronic components, packaging materials, machinery, transportation services, and industrial equipment could receive more business as mobile phone manufacturing scales up in the coming years.
