New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner knows that facing India will be a major challenge, particularly with experienced batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returning to the ODI setup. The two Indian stars are expected to attract huge crowds, while their recent performances have also given the opposition plenty to think about.
The first match of the upcoming ODI series is scheduled to be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Wednesday. Ahead of the contest, Santner spoke about the excitement surrounding Kohli and Rohit's return and the challenge they pose to New Zealand.
Santner Expects Huge Crowds for Kohli and Rohit
When asked whether the strong support from Indian fans makes playing against India feel like a home match for the visitors, Santner acknowledged the atmosphere created by the travelling supporters.
He said that it does feel that way to some extent because of the large crowds India attracts. He also expressed hope that the presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would bring even more spectators to the stadium.
The return of the two experienced batters is expected to make the ODI series particularly exciting for cricket fans.
Kohli and Rohit Arrive in Strong Form
Both Indian batters have been performing impressively and recently scored centuries in the ODI series against the West Indies.
Rohit Sharma scored 225 runs in three innings at an average of 75 and a strike rate of over 115. His performance included a century and a half-century.
Virat Kohli, meanwhile, accumulated 168 runs in three innings. His standout performance was an unbeaten 139 off just 88 balls in the opening match while chasing a target of 296.
Their recent performances have demonstrated that both players remain important contributors to India's ODI batting lineup.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, their experience and consistency could play a significant role in India's preparations.
Santner Says Age Has Not Slowed Down the Indian Stars
Santner also addressed the discussion surrounding Kohli and Rohit's age, making it clear that their performances continue to speak for themselves.
He acknowledged that the players are getting older but pointed out that they are still performing at a very high level. Having watched both batters throughout their careers, the New Zealand captain understands the quality and experience they bring to the Indian team.
Stopping India's Top Order Will Be a Major Challenge
Santner recognises that containing India's top order will be one of New Zealand's biggest challenges in the series.
Rohit's aggressive batting can put bowlers under pressure early in the innings, while Kohli has the ability to stabilise the batting lineup and build an innings. Shubman Gill's presence adds further strength to India's top order.
Santner indicated that New Zealand will need to maintain consistency with the ball and build pressure through disciplined bowling rather than depending on just one strategy.
With Kohli and Rohit in form and New Zealand determined to challenge India's batting strength, the upcoming ODI series promises an exciting contest between the two teams.c
