Maruti and Tata on Alert! New-Generation Hyundai Creta Spotted Testing, Hybrid Version to Boost Mileage

India’s most popular mid-size SUV, the Hyundai Creta, is gearing up for a major transformation. The third-generation Hyundai Creta has officially entered the testing phase, with camouflaged test mules recently spotted in South Korea. These spy images indicate that Hyundai is preparing a more modern, spacious, and fuel-efficient version of its blockbuster SUV.

According to media reports, the new-generation Creta is expected to launch next year, and it will arrive with noticeable design upgrades and mechanical refinements.

Bigger, Sharper and More Premium

The upcoming Hyundai Creta is likely to be slightly larger than the current model, following the same strategy Hyundai’s sister brand Kia adopted with the latest Kia Seltos. The SUV is expected to feature a more upright stance, a forward-sloping windscreen, shorter front and rear overhangs, and a longer wheelbase — all of which should translate into better road presence and improved cabin space.

Other expected highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, a roof-mounted spoiler, and a sharper overall design language, giving the Creta a more aggressive and premium appeal.

Engine Options Likely to Remain Familiar

Mechanically, Hyundai is expected to retain the existing engine lineup. The current Creta is offered with:

  • 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol (115 bhp)

  • 1.5-litre turbo petrol (160 bhp)

  • 1.5-litre turbo diesel (116 bhp)

Transmission options will continue to include a 6-speed manual as standard across variants. The NA petrol will get a CVT automatic, the diesel will retain a 6-speed automatic, while the turbo petrol engine will be paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

Hybrid Hyundai Creta Coming in 2027

The biggest update will arrive in 2027, when Hyundai is expected to introduce a strong hybrid powertrain for the Creta. The company is likely to combine the 1.5-litre NA petrol engine with hybrid technology, significantly improving fuel efficiency.

Interestingly, the same hybrid setup is expected to debut in the Kia Seltos, suggesting a shared strategy to counter fuel-efficient rivals from Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.

A Decade of Creta’s Dominance

Launched in 2015, the Hyundai Creta has ruled the Indian SUV segment for nearly a decade. Its stylish design, premium interiors, feature-loaded cabin, wide engine options, and strong resale value have made it a household name.

The Creta received its second generation in 2020, followed by a major facelift in 2024. In the same year, Hyundai crossed 1 million cumulative sales, and by July 2025, total sales surpassed 1.2 million units — a testament to the SUV’s unmatched popularity.
