Mahindra & Mahindra is preparing to introduce an updated version of its popular 3-door Thar in India. The facelift is expected to launch on September 22, 2026, bringing several changes to the SUV's exterior, cabin and technology.
Since the launch of the second-generation Thar, the SUV has built a strong presence in India's off-road and lifestyle vehicle segment. Mahindra has also expanded the Thar family with multiple variants and the larger 5-door Thar Roxx.
Now, the 3-door Thar is set to receive its first major update. While the SUV's core mechanical package is expected to remain largely unchanged, the facelift could introduce several design and feature upgrades.
Here are five major changes expected in the new Mahindra Thar.
1. New Grille With Thar Branding
One of the most noticeable changes could come at the front of the SUV.
The facelifted Thar is expected to receive a new five-slat grille featuring Thar branding. The design could take inspiration from the larger Thar Roxx, giving the 3-door SUV a more contemporary appearance while retaining its familiar boxy and rugged character.
The updated front-end design could help differentiate the facelift from the current model without changing its iconic overall silhouette.
2. New Alloy Wheel Design
Mahindra could also introduce redesigned alloy wheels with the facelift.
Teasers and spy images have indicated changes to the wheel design, although the wheel sizes are expected to remain broadly similar across the range.
The new alloy designs could give the Thar's side profile a more updated appearance while complementing its rugged styling.
3. Updated Lighting Inspired by the Thar Roxx
The lighting setup is another area expected to receive an update.
The new Thar could feature redesigned LED headlamps, updated daytime running lights and revised rear lamps. The lighting design is expected to draw inspiration from the Thar Roxx, bringing the 3-door model closer to Mahindra's latest SUV design language.
These changes could give the Thar a more modern road presence while maintaining its traditional styling cues.
4. More Technology and Convenience Features
The Thar has traditionally focused heavily on its off-road capability and rugged character. With the facelift, Mahindra is expected to add more features aimed at improving everyday usability.
Expected additions could include a 360-degree camera, automatic climate control and a fully digital instrument cluster.
A 360-degree camera could be particularly useful when manoeuvring the SUV in tight urban spaces, while automatic climate control could make daily driving more convenient.
5. More Comfortable and Premium Cabin
The interior could also receive an upgrade, with the facelift expected to offer leatherette upholstery and ventilated front seats.
Ventilated seats could be especially useful during India's hot weather, while redesigned seats may offer improved cushioning, support and bolstering.
These changes could make the Thar more comfortable for longer journeys while retaining the SUV's adventure-focused character.
Engine and Mechanical Setup Expected to Remain Similar
Despite the expected design and feature upgrades, the Thar facelift is not anticipated to receive major mechanical changes.
Mahindra is expected to continue with the existing engine and drivetrain options, with the primary focus of the update being on styling, technology and cabin comfort.
With the facelift, Mahindra appears to be addressing some of the Thar's everyday usability aspects while retaining the rugged character that has defined the 3-door SUV.
