The epic tale of the Ramayana has once again captured public attention following the release of the film Ramayana. One of the most emotional moments in the story is the brave attempt by Jatayu, the mighty bird, to rescue Goddess Sita from Ravana. While many people know about his courage and sacrifice, few are aware that Kerala is home to a magnificent monument dedicated to this legendary character.
Located in the Kollam district of Kerala, the Jatayu Earth Centre houses what is widely recognised as the world's largest bird sculpture. Situated on a rocky hill in Chadayamangalam, this remarkable attraction brings an important episode from the Ramayana to life. It is not just a monument but also a destination that combines mythology, adventure, art and nature.
A Massive Statue Dedicated to Jatayu
The centrepiece of Jatayu Earth Centre is an enormous sculpture of Jatayu, created by renowned sculptor, filmmaker and art director Rajiv Anchal. The monument represents the legendary bird in a wounded position, symbolising his ultimate sacrifice while trying to protect Sita from Ravana.
The sculpture is approximately 200 feet long, 150 feet wide and 70 feet high. Spread across nearly 65 acres and four hills, the entire project has been developed as a unique eco-tourism destination.
Who Was Jatayu in the Ramayana?
Jatayu holds an important place in the Hindu epic Ramayana. He is traditionally described as a powerful vulture king and appears in the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana.
According to the epic, Jatayu was a close friend of King Dasharatha, Lord Rama's father. He was known for his strength, courage and loyalty.
His most significant act of bravery took place when Ravana abducted Goddess Sita while Rama and Lakshmana were away. Hearing Sita's cries for help, Jatayu immediately came forward to rescue her.
The Brave Battle Between Jatayu and Ravana
Despite being advanced in age, Jatayu fearlessly challenged Ravana and demanded that he release Sita. What followed was a fierce battle in the sky.
Jatayu attacked Ravana and damaged his flying chariot, putting up a determined fight to save Sita. However, Ravana eventually overpowered the elderly bird and severed his wings with his weapon.
Severely injured, Jatayu fell to the ground while Ravana continued his journey with Sita. However, Jatayu managed to survive until Lord Rama and Lakshmana reached him. He informed them about Sita's abduction and the direction in which Ravana had taken her.
After sharing this crucial information, Jatayu breathed his last in Lord Rama's arms. Rama performed his final rites, honouring the bird's extraordinary courage and sacrifice.
