Diwali brings joy, lights, and the irresistible aroma of sweets and fried foods. From gujiyas and laddus to samosas and chips, festive treats are everywhere. But in the excitement, many forget about their digestive health, which can lead to acidity, gas, and constipation.
Dr. Chanchal Sharma, director of Asha Ayurveda and gynecologist, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a strong digestive fire during the festival. Here are her tips for enjoying Diwali without upsetting your stomach:
1. Maintain Eating Balance
Frequent snacking can strain digestion. Leave at least three hours between meals and avoid consuming heavy or oily foods all at once. A light walk after meals can significantly aid digestion.
2. Try Ginger and Lemon
Before indulging in festive treats, consume a small piece of ginger with lemon juice and a pinch of salt. This helps strengthen digestion and makes it easier for your body to process food.
3. Support Digestion with Triphala and Ajwain
A spoonful of Triphala with lukewarm water before bed helps flush out toxins. Celery is also effective for relieving gas and heaviness. Drinking lukewarm water infused with these herbs can further ease digestion.
4. Sip Herbal Drinks
During the festival, replace excessive tea or coffee with herbal infusions made of cumin, fennel, coriander, or mint. Honey and lemon water on an empty stomach in the morning also supports a healthy digestive system.
5. Detox with Light Foods Post-Festival
After Diwali, stick to light and easily digestible foods like khichdi, porridge, yogurt, or buttermilk to help flush out toxins. Reduce intake of sweets and fried items for a few days.
Dr. Sharma reminds us that Diwali is truly enjoyable when your stomach is happy. With a few simple precautions, a balanced diet, and easy Ayurvedic remedies, you can savor the festive treats without digestive troubles.
