Kanpur witnessed a heartbreaking incident on Monday when 17-year-old Raunak Pathak, a bright intermediate student and former city topper, died by suicide by jumping in front of a train. Raunak had scored 97.04 percent in his class 10 exams from Brij Kishori Devi Memorial School, earning recognition among teachers, friends, and the local community. The sudden tragedy has left his family and neighbourhood in deep shock.
Police say the reason behind the suicide is not yet known, though early inquiries suggest academic pressure may have played a role. Investigators are examining Raunak’s mobile phone, laptop, and call details to understand what might have driven him to take this extreme step.
Incident near Juhi Yard
The incident took place near Juhi Yard in Kanpur on Monday morning. Raunak had appeared for his Physics pre-board exam on Sunday. On Monday, he left home around 6:30 a.m. saying he needed to pick up some items. When he did not return and did not respond to calls, the family began searching for him.
His bike was found parked near a railway crossing. A short distance ahead, the family discovered Raunak’s body on the tracks. His mother, Lalita, fainted at the sight, and since regaining consciousness has been repeating, “What forced Raunak to do this? What will happen to us without him?”
Family in deep shock
Raunak’s father, Alok Pathak, works in a private job. The family includes his mother and his elder sister, Mini. Relatives described Raunak as calm, disciplined, and academically driven. Teachers say he was among the most promising students of his batch.
Police investigation
The GRP reached the spot after receiving information and sent the body for postmortem. Officials say the circumstances suggest possible study-related stress, but they are keeping all angles open. Digital devices and communication records are being analysed, and Raunak’s friends are being questioned for additional insight.
The incident has cast a shadow over Raunak’s school and neighbourhood. Teachers, students, and residents are struggling to understand what pushed such a bright and hardworking student to such a tragic end.
